Abstract: The second visit to Italy by Muammar Gheddafi this year has been in his capacity as Chairman of the African Union.
After many years of Pan-African rhetoric and inter-African activism, the Libyan leader is at the head of the continental organisation and is in a position to both steer the organisation towards his origi-nal dreams and to reap the benefit in terms of international legitimisation, regional influ-ence and internal development.


Il ritorno di Muammar Ghed-dafi in Italia per il vertice G8 tenutosi a L’Aquila come rap-presentante dell’Unione afri-cana, ha riportato l’attenzione verso il ruolo della Libia nel continente. Sin dal suo arrivo al potere, con il colpo di stato compiuto quasi quarant’anni fa, il 1° settembre 1969, il leader libico ha visto l’Africa come possibile area geopoliti-ca di propria influenza. Oggi, la Libia dimostra ancor mag-giore, interesse verso il conti-nente.
